Video Surveillance Cameras for Hospitals and Medical Facilities – Advantages & Disadvantages
Video surveillance in Hospitals
The video surveillance in hospitals and medical facilities is crucially inevitable. Since, a hospital is a place where countless number of visitors, patients and their attendants move throughout day and night. This makes the hospitals more susceptible to unpredictable events. The surveillance cameras can protect the employees and patients of the hospitals from various types of problems and unwanted incidents. Moreover, the surveillance camera system can help in increasing the productivity of the employees and can provide visual evidence of any kind of events.
Advantages of Hospital video surveillance:
- Overall Security – The video surveillance cameras placed in hospitals prevent the crime and other types of mischievous activities. The unauthorized visitors can be identified and restricted with the help of monitoring through these surveillance cameras.
- Prevents False Claims - There may be some of the visitors or patients who falsely claim of injury by the hospital property. The surveillance cameras can help going into depth by monitoring the events and can prevent such claims from being accepted and save the hospitals from paying for the false claims.
- Improve Employees’ Productivity – The surveillance cameras installed in the hospital premises can improve the overall communication between various departments and thus can increase the employees’ productivity. Moreover, the employees don’t fall into disputes and other time wasting activities which result an improved control over the employees of the hospital.
- Resolve Employees’ Disputes - At times there may arise some disputes between the employees or patients. So such disputes may immediately be detected and sorted out with the help of visual evidence before turning into any violence.
- Constant Monitoring – The surveillance cameras help to monitor the overall activities of the hospital. So, there is a sense of better control and efficiency in the hospital.
- Remote Monitoring – The IP systems help the authorized officers to watch the real time images over the internet from any place. This system results in better control and quality productivity of the hospital.
- Digital Recording – The IP system of the surveillance camera provide the ability to store the footage on network servers, hard drives or NVR (network video recorder). This result in improved searching abilities and the old footage can be recollected whenever required.
- Evidence for investigation – The surveillance system provide the visual evidences of any criminal activity taken place inside or around the premises allowing the investigators to resolve the case with right evidences.
Disadvantages of hospital surveillance camera system:
- Privacy – Though, a surveillance system is very important for the healthcare centers and hospitals still it should be established that the employees rest rooms and private areas of the patients should not be covered under monitoring.
- Over-reliance On Surveillance System – The surveillance systems should not be over-relied for total security of the hospital. Hence, the alternative security arrangements are also to be needed for perfect security of the hospital.
- Tampering – Any attempt to damage or tampering with the surveillance system can interrupt the video signals. Therefore, an alternative arrangement should be in place to recover the lost signals.
Configuration of security surveillance system: Various factors are to be considered before installing the surveillance system in the hospitals. Consider the size, topography and architecture of the hospitals to determine the exact places for the installation of the cameras. Evaluate the existing security system of the hospital or healthcare facility. Consider the number and requirement of the security personnel. Recall incidents of criminal activities and break-ins in the hospital, if any. Recall the incidents of employee disputes that needed the visual evidence. See the location of the parking lot in the hospital. Check if there have been incidents of false claims in the hospital. Consider the most critical areas which need the video surveillance.
Setup Advice: Place the cameras at all the entrance and exit gates to capture the clearer view of all the persons who enter and leave the premises. Place cameras at all the hall ways, lobbies, and waiting halls to monitor all the activities of the people. Cameras are needed to be positioned in the elevators and fire escapes. Do position the cameras in parking lots and the parks inside the premises of the hospital. Placement of cameras is also needed at the entrance of the restricted areas to ensure that only the authorized persons get inside. The corridors and connecting passages of the buildings are also to be monitored. The outdoor cameras are as important as the cameras inside for the hospital.
