Thief caught on camera is charged
A person who called Crime Stoppers is getting credit from Gainesville police for the arrest of a man accused of burglarizing a Kirkwood home.
Police said they used the tip to locate the man whose face resembled surveillance photos taken inside the home.
Ruben Alvin Manning Jr., 25, of 22514 S.E. 76th Place in Hawthorne was arrested Friday morning on charges of burglary and grand theft.
The circumstances that led to Manning’s arrest began last year, according to police Capt. Ed Book. “This same house was burglarized last year and we made an unrelated arrest when the homeowner identified a guitar that belonged to one of the children” after the guitar had been pawned.
“After that burglary, the homeowner installed these surveillance cameras,” Book said.
The homeowners reported the most recent burglary on Wednesday evening and gave police photos taken by a motion-activated camera that had been set up near an entertainment center.
The photos showed the suspect looking directly into the camera several times before pushing it away with his bare hand. Several fingerprints were later lifted from the camera, police said.
The man’s photos were released to The Sun and other local media outlets as well as to Kirkwood area residents. Book said an anonymous caller to Crime Stoppers said the man in the photos looked like Manning and gave police information about where he was likely to be found on Friday morning.
“We went to where the caller told us to go, and that is where we found him,” Book said.
Following his arrest in connection with the Kirkwood burglary, Manning was booked into the Alachua County jail.
