iWatch technical Expert view: OPERATING ENVIRONMENT
No matter how small or how big the Security System is, the heart of all Security System is Computer. Computer is the master regulator or chief controller behind the Setup of Security System. Since there are several delicate components like Microprocessor, chips etc & etc, a proper environment is required for their normal function. Overheating may occur due to following reasons:
1) Over load on the server software.
2) Lack of ventilation near the computer.
3) Lack of required hardware in the system.
4) Cloging of the vents due to dust or some other obstruction.
5) Carelessness in maintaining optimum temperature & moisture by Air-condition.
Due to all above condition your Computer become sick, ultimately affects your Security Systems.
Though there are many reasons but there are three main issues to deal with when fighting the problem of overheating:
# The first issue is sufficient air temperature. This is the greatest factor in keeping your system at its optimal performance. If the room temperature is 75 degrees then the equipment can not be cooled below that temperature. In some cases 75 degrees is already very close to a computers maximum operating temperature thus creating a potential system failure and hardware crash. The other important factor is enclosures in which the computer is stored (a rack or other cabinet) that may increase the heat surrounding the computer. An average computer can generate 1200 BTU’s/hour (Definition of BTU: a unit of heat equal to the amount of heat required to raise one pound of water one degree Fahrenheit at one atmosphere pressure). A great amount of heat can be generated by placing multiple computers in the same cabinet. If not properly cooled and ventilated they will sometime cause system failures to occur. Therefore, the first step is to make sure that the room in which the computers and security equipment are stored is cool. The recommended temperature for a server/security room is between 18 and 20 degrees Celsius.
# The second issue is airflow. It is extremely important to consider air flow when designing and laying out a rack system or other storage for your security equipment. If the hot air generated by your equipment is not vented and cooler air forced in, then hot air pockets will form. It may cause your equipment to crash, overheat, or malfunction in many way. Air flow is not only installing a number of fans in a cabinet. It requires proper use of air-flow and pressure to create a system that will properly cool your security equipment. Another problem that restricts air flow in a system is the poor construction layout and structuring of the cables in a rack or cabinet. If cables are not neatly trained and are laying on cooling components or are in the way of the cooling system, they can easily cause a system to overheat due to hindrance.
# The third issue for cooling your security equipment is air pressure. Air pressure can be critical because too much pressure can cause a vortex and two little will not cool the equipment. Air pressure acts something like water when poured into a funnel. If you pour the water too fast it will back up and overflow. Air pressure acts the same way, if you force too much air through a rack or a cabinet you may be limiting the overall cooling of the system.
In brief, cooling should always be considered when designing a system, otherwise the systems lifespan will be considerably curtailed. Considering above mentioned points while designing control room, you can make your Computer happy:
