Is Investing In Home Surveillance A Good Home Security Tactic?

Posted on July 25th, 2010 by Martin.l

The time has come to take it up a notch.  As a homeowner living in today’s modern society of an economic slump and an increased terrorism threat, you are more than ready to guard your loved ones and personal property from anything that could potentially occur. You have already upgraded you home security system with heavy-duty locks, outdoor walkway lights and a home alarm network that includes glass break sensors and carbon monoxide detectors. Now, you are thinking about taking home security one-step further; you are considering installing a home surveillance system.

Utilized in most banks and commercial stores, video cameras and surveillance systems are one of the top security devices on the current market. They constantly monitor and record every occurrence and happening within and around a piece of property, keeping watch on everyone.  In fact, the latest systems include such additional features as night vision and infrared technology, allowing the cameras to see what is happening at all times of day. Even audio is now utilized, allowing these systems to record voices, which can ameliorate the apprehension of criminals.

Yet, with regards to the actual installation of a home video surveillance system, many people are hesitant. Sure, a video camera is a great home security measure, they have been statistically proven to reduce crimes since people know that they are being watched, but at the same time issues of trust can often arise. Nannies, baby sitters and house cleaners who frequent a residence may feel uneasy knowing that they are being watched on camera.  Not to mention that if the cameras are hidden, away from view, many of these workers will believe that overall trust has been violated and may refuse to continue working at a given home. This is one of the reasons why many security experts discourage the use of nanny cams, video cameras hidden within stuffed animals or photos.

At the same time, however, surveillance systems add an extra advantage to the overall residence security. If a homeowner is out of town, either at work or on vacation, they can utilize their smart phone device or laptop computer – provided that they have a fast Internet connection – and log in to their video camera system to check up on things.  Even parents on business trips can quickly check up on their kids to make sure that they are eating dinner and getting to bed on time.

Additionally, if the unthinkable were to occur and a house was burgled, a surveillance system would record the entire instance either on video or to an online database so that homeowners and police officers could easily access the information to find the culprits.

Now, all of these home security benefits do come with a hefty cost. Most of these systems are pretty pricey as well as difficult and expensive to install. But, if thinking about incorporating more security into a residence, a surveillance system is more often than not the next best step. From there, homeowners can rest assured knowing that although they may not be able to directly monitor their house in person, they can still keep an eye out for any suspicious behavior.
